MOUNTAIN MINORITIES: THE TAMANG AND RAI CULTURES OF NEPAL

Nestled in the mountains of the Himalayas is the Buddha’s birthplace — Nepal. UH Manoa’s East-West Center takes a look at two communities that inhabit the tiny country: the Tamang and Rai of the Middle Hills. Art, clothes, weavings, utensils and more will be on display through May 10, as well as photographs of Nepali life and thanka hangings.

Coming up are two illustrated talks at East-West Center Gallery. Society of Nepalese in Hawaii president Suresh Tamang discusses “The Tamang: Mountain Indigenous Community” from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 22), while The Nepal Foundation chairwoman Mary Carroll arrives the following week (March 1) at the same time to present “Release from Poverty: A Nepal Community’s Inspiring Story.”

Math and art are not mutually exclusive things in Honolulu Museum of Art’s Spalding House exhibit, Less = More. Geometry, multiplication and exponents have never been so beautiful, with Richard Alexander and Michael LaFosse’s origami flower sculptures (pictured) or Kumi Yamashita’s thread portraits serving as prime examples of the beauty of numbers.

Other participating artists include Pierre Bonnard, Ken Bushnell, Chun Kwang Young, Vik Muniz, John Storrs and art collective .5ppi. The exhibit runs until May 31.

POW! WOW! HAWAII MURALS

POW! WOW! just wrapped up this past weekend (you read our story about it, right?), but the dozens of murals produced during the week-long arts and music festival are here to stay — for now. Take a walk around Kakaako and check out the wall-size masterpieces while they’re still fresh and unweathered by the elements. One of our favorites? Tristan Eaton’s colorful mural-in-a-mural on Ahui Street.
