Doraku Sushi is an amalgamation of a lot of great things: an extensive menu of Japanese-inspired eats in a contemporary environment that provides just the right atmosphere for any occasion — from date night to girls’ (or dudes’) night. In retrospect, it probably wasn’t a difficult task for owner Kevin Aoki, whose father, Rocky, transformed Japanese cuisine in America with Benihana, while brother Steve has become synonymous with electro house music. From its menu, sample everything from Oyster Shooters to Chirashi Don (pictured), plus dessert specialties such as the Brownie Tempura. Symbols on the menu alert diners to popular dishes and locally sourced items. And don’t forget about its second location in Waikiki, located in Royal Hawaiian Center.

Nestled within The Republik sits a cozy lounge filled with wonderful drinks and amazing food. Environment is everything at The Safehouse, which utilizes crisp white bar stools that complement black couches, where people mingle as they sip hand-crafted cocktails or glasses of wine. On the menu are delicious dishes that are perfect for sharing and sampling. Taijin Fries feature a little zest thanks to a spicy aioli sauce, while the “Pudge” Burger gives off a savory smoked applewood bacon aroma. There’s a little bit of everything on the menu, including Greek salad, tacos, pizzas, cheese bread and more. Along with excellent late-night food and drink are weekly events, live music and snazzy DJs.
