CHOCOLATE-HAUPIA SNOW
FROSTCITY

2570 S. Beretania St. #105, Honolulu
Phone number (808) 947-3328

“Snow” is the perfect dessert for when you want to be decadent and gluttonous … without actually being decadent and gluttonous. This ice cream/shave ice/ whatever-it-actually-is hybrid is always light, sweet and satisfying without any of the guilt that comes with each creamy bite of gelato. You could probably eat a large by yourself, but we prefer to share. The classic combo of haupia and chocolate is always a winner, though we’re also partial to the strawberry-dark chocolate pairing. Flavors vary from milk to mango to … durian? Another great perk: The cigar cookie and assorted garnishes on the side. When we went, we had grapes, soft mochi, boba and … Corn Pops. So weird, and yet, so right!

TAGLIATELLE AI FRUTTI DI MARE
ARANCINO AT THE KAHALA

5000 Kahala Ave., Kahala
Phone number (808) 380-4400
website arancino.com

Everything about Arancino at The Kahala exudes elegance — but to dine there, you don’t necessarily have to break the bank. This dish is only $27 and features tiger shrimp and scallops over pasta, all bathed in a lemon garlic white wine truffle oil. The sauce can tend toward a little too lemon-y and not enough truffle flavor (is there ever enough truffle flavor with anything?), but the real star here is the delicate house-made tagliatelle pasta. The portion looks small when it arrives, but we think its true size must just be dwarfed by the enormous plate it comes in; trust us, it’s filling — but not too filling that you won’t have room for a refreshing Gelato Affogato to wash it down.
