It was a morning that started off quite dull, with a too-early jaunt into town searching for breakfast.

After some hemming and hawing over where might be the least crowded or who had the most interesting menu, I ended up at the nook neighborhood bistro.

And it more than made up for that early wake-up call.

There are a number of places I could have gone — Sweet E’s for its French toast, bills Sydney for corn fritters, Koko Head Café for just about anything. I would have enjoyed any of those.

But there was something about the nook, something I can’t quite put my finger on, though I suspect it has a lot to do with how unexpectedly amazing the experience was. Tucked into a corner slightly hidden in Puck’s Alley, the nook managed to be quiet, quaint and exciting all at the same time. The space it occupies suits its name well, and service was smooth and friendly the morning I stopped in.

Its menu, though, clearly is where the nook likes to have fun. Looking at it alone somewhat jolted me awake because as much as items felt familiar, there was nothing normal or boring about it.

French toast isn’t simply thick cuts of bread dipped into batter and fried. At the nook, it’s Apple Banana French Toast with a chocolate peanut butter sauce. Sadly, I did not sample that particular item. I’m saving it for my next visit.

I did, however, order the Mochiko Chicken and Mochi Waffles — and yes, it was as indulgent as it sounds. Mochi waffles always should be a thing, period. It was crunchy and chewy and slightly sweet, and just amazing. Mochiko chicken brought in a savory element that balanced out the dish, and bacon maple syrup made it really feel like breakfast.

Also available to eat while dining in, or to take home, are baked goods. On this particular day, the nook was offering a Strawberry Pineapple Scone and Mango Muffin. Naturally, I took both with me.

The muffin was enjoyable, with chunks of real mango inside. The scone, though, was perfect. Buttery, flaky and not too dense, I only wish I wouldn’t feel guilty eating more on a regular basis.

It was a great start to my day that somehow didn’t make me feel weighted down or tired. My only regret that morning: not eating more of my food and choosing instead to share it with the rest of the Metro staff. Shame on me.

ACAI ALERT

Speaking of breakfast, I’ve been indulging in something almost on a weekly basis these days: acai bowls from The Row Bar at Waterfront Plaza.

I know, I know —how could a bar possibly make one of the best acai bowls on this island, you are asking yourself.

Trust me, it’s that good.

There always is the right granola-to-acai ratio, and if you order the large portion, there are two layers of crunch. Slices of banana and strawberries, along with blueberries, always are served in generous portions.

And unlike some acai bowls that are too solid or others that are blended to mush, this one falls right in between, aka perfect.
