Letter From The Editor

Metro-Christina-MugYou know that scene in Empire Records when Ethan Embry runs through the store screaming, “It’s Rex Manning Day!”? Well, every time I am excited about an event, I think of that scene and approximate his quote for whatever is going on in my life.

And now, finally, it’s Future Islands Day!

Future Islands, one of my all-time favorite bands, plays at The Republik Tuesday. Writer Jaimie Kim was lucky enough to snag an interview with the band for our feature story on Page 10, in which they discuss how they’re coping with rising fame and the inspiration behind their latest album, Singles. And if you’re not familiar with the band, she also provides a breakdown of their work and a suggested playlist.

As for less exciting things, Valentine’s Day is coming up. Personally, I have never been a fan of this “holiday,” but we need some pseudo-occasions to fill up the winter months, I guess. On Page 7, Christa Wittmier reflects on being single during on this day — and has a helpful hint if you’re still hunting for a gift.

Our bar and drinks features on Page 16 almost have me changing my mind about celebrating Valentine’s Day, though. Rachel Breit gives us the lowdown on a sweet drink from Stage Restaurant, aptly called Love Potion #9. Plus, our bar columnist Sammi Baum takes us inside Formaggio. If you can’t have a Valentine, at least you can have wine.
