Letter From The Editor

A few weeks ago, when the Metro staff was discussing the possibility of doing a summer issue and what it would entail, we stopped to ask ourselves why. After all, as columnist Anton Glamb points out his article on Page 8, summer in Hawaii isn’t really all that different than winter.

Yet, we all felt compelled to acknowledge summer somehow. What is it that’s so special about this season?

Maybe it’s all just misplaced nostalgia for the days when we were kids and had three full months off in the summertime. It’s probably for that reason that summer seems to evoke all types of warm feelings — other than because of the weather — and is the backdrop to so many memories.

So, misplaced nostalgia or not, we’re celebrating summer by sharing some of our summer memories with you, starting on Page 12.

Tell us your own stories of summer, or whatever else, by submitting a Shared Space essay. This week, check out a piece by James Charisma in which he contemplates the passage of time on Page 4.

Also in this issue, Roger Bong discusses a new find that channels the sound of summer, Christa Wittmier has a helpful tip for Mac users to keep cool (Page 9), and guest contributor Kait Hanson takes us inside one of her favorite summer getaways.
