Letter From The Editor

Metro-093015-editorWith Halloween approaching, a lot of us are participating in our typical traditions that come up this time of year: trips to the pumpkin patch, making costumes, watching scary movies and visiting haunted houses.

That got us here at Metro thinking: How are haunted houses put together? Who are these people that make a living out of scaring us? What do they like about it?

So we decided to check in with the Haunted Plantation in Waipahu, one of the longest-running and most popular haunted attractions on the island. And luckily, we found that organizers Noa Laporga and Angelina Khan were nowhere near as menacing as their frightening creations (they were also the pair behind 1706 and Zombie Gunstock Hayride) would suggest. In fact, they’re both incredibly friendly and gave us full access into their preparation for Haunted Plantation one afternoon. Plus, I even got a sneak peek into their latest attraction, The Outbreak Experience in Kakaako. You can read more about both of those in our feature story.

If you prefer to experience some spookiness on the screen versus in real life, Paige Takeya tells you why she thinks you should go with scary video games instead of horror movies.

And if you’re still looking for things to do on Oct. 31, we’ve got some suggestions for you.
