Not So ‘Fantastic’

‘FANTASTIC FOUR’ TRAILER REVIEW BY METRO CREW

When a group travels to an alternate universe in the name of research, the trip doesn’t go exactly as planned: They come back with superpowers. Now they have to learn to use their newfound skills to save the world. Sound familiar? Other than sounding like basically every other superhero flick, a film of the same name — and the same plot — is still fresh in our minds. We’re not sure what the point of this reboot is.

Fantastic Four opens in wide release Aug. 7.

CHRISTINA: I know this is supposed to be one of those intense action movies, but this just looks boring. I was bored just watching this two-minute trailer.

PAIGE: I have never found the Fantastic Four to be very interesting as a group, and I think making them all young here, and separated from the rest of the Marvel heroes, deprives them of the few things that do make them interesting. Sue and Reed’s marriage (with children!) has always struck me as something worth exploring in more detail, especially as most superheroes purposefully forsake that life. Reed’s involvement in the secretly-controlling-the-world-without-telling-anyone Illuminati is also probably one of the few contexts I’ve really enjoyed his character. Otherwise, the Fantastic Four are kind of meh.

JAMES: Oh man. Seems the entire origin story was neatly summarized in the first minute of the trailer, and I can’t imagine sitting through the actual buildup, unfolding in real movie time with all the obligatory lab banter and pseudo-scientific talk about parallel universes and such.

NICOLE: I remember watching the cartoon as a kid, and I loved everything about it. Because I watched the cartoon, that’s what’s most prevalent in my mind — not the comics. So I also half expected Sue and Reed to be older … I feel like Doom should be more prevalent.

PAIGE: I actually did not really remember Doctor Doom was in this, which goes to show that he will probably be another casualty in a long line of forgettable superhero villains.

CHRISTINA: Didn’t they just make a Fantastic Four movie kind of recently?

NICOLE: It was like a decade ago. Haha. You’re talking about the one with Jessica Alba, right?

CHRISTINA: Yeah … You’re kidding me. How was that 10 years ago?

JAIMIE: The cast photos alone have left me feeling super MEH about this one. I still can’t even get through the other film. I just saw a picture of the cast yesterday from Comic Con and they look even more boring than the other one. Also, I dislike Kate Mara. I don’t know if it’s because of her character in House of Cards, or how she weirdly kissed Kevin Spacey after he won the Emmy/Golden Globe (I can’t remember which) for his role in the same show. I just don’t like her.

PAIGE: I’m not a huge fan of Kate Mara either. Honestly, I prefer Rooney Mara’s crazy I-will-become-Lisbeth-Sa-lander-for-this-role vibe a lot more.

CHRISTINA: I haven’t seen Kate Mara in anything other than really small roles (I still need to watch House of Cards), but I do really like Miles Teller. He was obviously great in Whiplash, and I liked him in The Spectacular Now as well.

PAIGE: This movie also appears to be incredibly generic, but yes, I will somehow still convince myself to see it, because it’ll probably crossover with X-Men at some point, and I might as well be ready.
