Musical Magic

Metro-122414-ReelTalk-TrailerReview-Woods2Adapted from a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, Into the Woods follows a young couple (James Corden and Emily Blunt) on their mission to break a witch’s curse that has left them childless. Along the way, they encounter characters from classic fairy tales, including Cinderella (Anna Kendrick) and her Prince (Chris Pine), Little Red Riding Hood and The Wolf (Lilla Crawford and Johnny Depp), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy). Die-hard fans of the Broadway version may not be too keen on some significant changes that reportedly have been made for the big-screen version, but we agree that the trailer looks pretty promising.

Into the Woods opens in wide release on Dec. 25. >>

JAIMIE: I want to see this so badly. However, I am tired of Johnny Depp.

NICOLE: I KNEW he was going to be the Wolf! When they just showed the hand coming across the tree, I knew.

CHRISTINA: He is basically just weird creatures in every movie now.

JAIMIE: Yeah, it was fun in the 1980s and 1990s when it was new, but now he just plays the same person.

JAMES: His cameo in 21 Jump Street was good.

NICOLE: I like Anna Kendrick. She’s gorgeous.

JAIMIE: I do, too. I love Emily Blunt. Also, girl crush. I like her a lot. And she is married to Jim (from The Office, actor John Krasinski).

NICOLE: I was kind of hoping Jim would have a normal-person wife.

CHRISTINA: Like you?

NICOLE: Yeah …

CHRISTINA: I know that everyone loves Anna Kendrick, and I wouldn’t say that I dislike her, but I just don’t see the mass appeal. But also, I’ve only seen her in two movies, and one of them was Drinking Buddies, where I feel she was just greatly overshadowed by Olivia Wilde.

JAMES: Which one was she in Drinking Buddies? Was she the other girl?

CHRISTINA: Yeah.

JAMES: Yeah, she was overshadowed. Anna Kendrick was good in Up In The Air, though.

CHRISTINA: That is the other movie I’ve seen her in — and she was really good in that.

PAIGE: Maybe it’s because she has that every-girl quality. She is kind of ordinary, and yet approachable … I am surprised Chris Pine is in this. I am surprised Chris Pine has so much work.

CHRISTINA: You don’t like him?

PAIGE: On the scale of Hollywood Chris-es that are popular now, Evans is the best. (Pine) is just so generic.

CHRISTINA: I think he’s just a James Marsden knockoff.

JAIMIE: However, he is kind of the perfect person to play the prince from Cinderella.

In the animated movie, the prince is just so blank. Chris Pine is blank also.

JAMES: You’re talking about Captain Kirk there.

NICOLE: He just looks confused in the trailer. When they are standing on the castle looking out, I don’t think he knows what he is doing.

PAIGE: Of course, he is playing the douche-y prince.

NICOLE: I like musical movies.

JAIMIE: I love musical movies.

PAIGE: I don’t like musicals. You can’t sing in the middle of the movie. I can’t deal with it.

NICOLE: Even if they are Disney movies?

PAIGE: If they are animated films, then it’s OK. But if it’s real people stopping everything to sing, I don’t like it.

NICOLE: Did you like Frozen?

JAIMIE: Yes!

NICOLE: I bet Reece (Jaimie’s boyfriend) didn’t like Frozen.

JAIMIE: He liked it more than I did. He was sitting next to a boy who was about 10, and he was laughing louder than the boy. I was like, “This is embarrassing.”
