Sundance Institute

Honolulu Museum of Art’s Doris Duke Theatre collaborates with Sundance Institute to present the Sundance ShortsLab: Honolulu seminar.

The first session of the two-day event is comprised of panel discussions aimed at aspiring filmmakers — or those simply interested in the medium. Panelists, which include Sundance programmers and a set of to-be-determined filmmakers, will share insight on developing, making and marketing films.

On the second day, audience members can enjoy a selection of Sundance short films chosen by Sundance Institute’s senior short film programmer Mike Plante.

Panel discussions are from noon to 5 p.m. March 21, and film screenings take place at 1, 4 and 7:30 p.m. March 22.

The event is free, but reservations are required.

‘SIREN SONG’

Siren Song takes us on a journey alongside a sailor who has fallen for a woman he’s been communi

cating with but never has met in person. But things aren’t what they appear to be, and it seems that the sailor is a victim of an elaborate game of deception.

No, this isn’t the latest episode of Catfish. This is Hawaii Opera Theatre’s (HOT) latest production. With this modern opera, which is based on a true story, HOT is reversing any preconceived notions you thought you had about this art form being boring or stuffy.

The opera runs March 20-29 at Kakaako Agora. The March 21 performance also will include food, drinks and live music before the show.

Visit hawaiiopera.org for times and more information. For tickets, call the HOT box office at 596-7858.
